Watercolor Sketching: Line and Wash Supplies
Canson Watercolor SketchbookAvailable online and at Michaels, about $12. 7x10 is a good size.
Don't forget a penci! Any #2 pencil will work. Stevie uses an inexpensive Bic pencil., but not the eraser! Invest in a good white eraser, like the one below. Your paper will thank you.
VANISH -- A very good white eraser. Available online, about $6.
Micron felt tip pens, permanent ink. Stevie uses these. Excellent sketch pens. Sizes 03 and 05 are both good (05 is just a bit wider line). Stevie mostly uses 05. Available at Michaels for about $10.
A surface to paint on: This could be a clipboard or a watercolor board. Stevie uses a lightweight piece of Plastic Corrugated Board by Creatology™ sold at Michaels for $5. It is sold in a 20x30 sheet and is easily cut with a craft knife. Stevie makes six 10x10 boards with one sheet.
A small spray bottle. This one is from Walmart, $1.
Don't forget a towel. Stevie uses a smalll 12x12 micro fiber towel.
Brushes: Stevie uses Princeton Heritage or Velvetouch brushes. Do NOT buy Princeton Neptune Brushes if you're just starting out. They are too soft and hold too much water. A round # 8 and a 1/2" flat brush are good to start out. A liner brush is nice to have, too. These brushes are sold at Michaels in sets for about $30, or separately for about $10 each.

Which watercolor set to buy?
It's up to you, and how much you want to spend. You will get the best results with the best paint you can afford. The Winsor & Newton palettes are great quality and very portable. They range in price from about $20 - $50. Stevie uses these palettes for travel, but they work just as well in the studio. Sold at Michaels and online.
This is Stevie's regular studio palette. It is made by Mijello and sold online, and the wells are empty. About $12. Then Stevie fills the wells with tube colors, mostly Winsor & Newton and Daniel Smith paints.
Handy to have for fixing small mistakes and adding highlights: Uniball Signo Broad pen and Posca fine point pen, both in white and sold at Michaels.
Fun to have: Gelly Roll pens for accents on your paintings. Nice to have, but not necessary.
A necessity: a few paper towels. Stevie buys the Bounty half size, then cuts them in half again.
Another nice to have: a sketch bag to hold all your supplies. Then it's ready wherever you go! This is Stevie's sketch bag, available at Michaels for $5.
Don't forget a water container. Stevie keeps a couple plastic cups in her sketch bag to hold water.
